Potion Explosion Board Game | Or How to Brew Up Some Chaos…

Reading Time: 7 minutes

What’s up, Chaos Heroes!
Today, I’m bringing you an explosive puzzle board game that would bring a tear even to Professor Snape’s eye. This is none other than the Potion Explosion board game—or “Potion Commotion,” as a little wordsmith-in-training once called it at our table.

(Quick disclaimer right out of the gate: while the vibe is magical and I’ll probably drop a few Hogwarts references, this is NOT an official Harry Potter game. But trust me, the theme fits perfectly!)

What do you need to know about the Potion Explosion board game?

Imagine you’re final-year apprentices at a magic academy, desperately trying to show off during your final potion-brewing exam.
The goal? We’re not talking about brewing some boring dandelion tea here. You have to whip up the most potent concoctions out of ogre snot and other similar delicacies to conjure up the most victory points—and, of course, to impress the professors.

Potion Explosion ingredients

(Don’t worry about the Hungarian rulebook on the left; ‘Ogretakony’ just means ‘Ogre Snot’, and let me tell you, it’s every bit as gross and useful in English!)

You can even chug the potions you make so you can work more efficiently. It’s like a little performance enhancer, only this one is legal.
Fortunately, this puzzle board game doesn’t require you to learn Elvish to play it; the iconography is super clear and completely language-independent.

Basic Data

  • Languages: English, French, Chinese, Italian, Polish, Ukrainian, Spanish, Czech
  • Language Dependence: None (No necessary in-game text. The game components are text-free, you only need to read the rulebook!)
  • Player count: 2-4 players
  • Age: 8+
  • Playtime: 30-45 minutes
  • BGG Complexity: 1.78 / 5
  • Mechanics: Set collection, drafting, pattern recognition, take that

Potion Explosion Board Game: Gameplay Experience

The gameplay is as clever as the fine print on a magic scroll, but it’s not complicated at all. The essence lies in spotting chain reactions and good timing.

The Race for Magical Ingredients: On your turn, you pluck a single ingredient marble from the dispenser. And here comes the big bang, the explosion, the whole point of the game! If the removal of your marble causes two (or more) marbles of the same color to crash into each other, then… BOOM! You get those too!

If that crash brings more identical colors together, those are yours as well! With one well-planned move, you can swipe half a laboratory’s worth of ingredients. It’s basically tabletop Candy Crush!
You then place your acquired marbles onto your own unfinished potion flasks. The exact recipes are visible right on the tiles.

Is the brew ready? Then it’s time to chug it! As soon as you’ve gathered all the ingredients for an elixir, it is officially declared complete. Not only does this score you points at the end of the game, but drinking every potion grants you a one-time special ability (just like Gummiberry Juice, for those who remember the 90s…). For example, you can snag extra marbles from the dispenser or steal ingredients from others.

Professor to checkout register -2, please—I mean, to the table: If you feel like the marbles are conspiring against you, you generally have the option to ask for “Professor’s Help” at the cost of -2 points.
We have never used this. I mean, come on… Who dares to ask Professor Snape for help?! (Again, he’s not specifically in the game, but there is a professor token).

If the Skill tokens—which are set out at the beginning based on the number of apprentices—run out, the exam is over.
Players earn Skill tokens if they brew 3 identical elixirs or 5 different ones.

 3 identical elixirs
5 different elixirs

The game can also end if there are absolutely no potion tiles left to brew, though that has never happened to us. After the trigger, it’s time for the grand point tally: you count up the completed potions and Skill tokens, subtract 2 points for every time the professor helped you brew, and find out who has become the Grand Master Mixologist of the graduating class!

Components

Alright, Chaos Heroes, before we get into anything else, let’s tip our wizard hats to the marble dispenser. When I first tried it, watching the marbles clink and roll down, and realizing that one clever pull could trigger an unbelievable chain reaction… well, that is tangible, colorful magic. It’s like the love child of a pinball machine and a magic wand. Fiddling with these marbles feels more magical than squeezing the eyes out of a stress-relief rubber pig.

The elixir tiles are made of thick cardboard with punched-out holes so the marbles don’t start forming their own ecosystem on your table. The cardboard components are totally fine, but obviously, the most spectacular element of the game is the dispenser itself. It earns a special purple Dicepool Magic point. Also, the back of the dispenser cleverly doubles as a storage drawer for the marbles when the game isn’t on the lab table.

The Dicepool Magic Scale

The WOW:

  • The Marble Dispenser: I can’t emphasize this enough. It’s brilliant, addictive, tactile, and simply a joy to play with. They also solved the storage problem perfectly with the bottom drawer.
  • A Spectacular, Colorful Carousel: The whole game is a visual treat. The bright marbles, the beautifully illustrated potions—everything contributes to the magical atmosphere.
  • Easy to Learn, Yet a Brain-Teasing Puzzle: The rules can be grasped in minutes, allowing even novice wizards to jump right in. But optimizing the chain reactions, comboing the potion abilities, and timing your moves perfectly give it enough depth so that even veteran Chaos Heroes won’t get bored after two brews.
  • Pleasant Interaction: We snatch ingredients out from under each other’s noses or just mess up the dispenser. Plus, some potions let you sprinkle a little pepper on the others (like marble stealing), but mostly, everyone is focused on their own little flasks.

  • Replayability Factor: The different types of potions (only a portion of them are used in each game) and the random distribution of the marbles in the dispenser ensure that every single session is different. There’s always a new strategy or a new potion combo to try ou

The MEH…

  • Luck Factor: Of course there is one. Those mischievous marbles roll out of the dispenser however they please, and the chain reactions—or even the potion tiles available—don’t always align with your master plan. Anyone who climbs the walls over RNG might force a fake smile during the game. But hey, you always need a little chaos and randomness for magic, right?
  • Analysis Paralysis Danger (Though Not Severe): Sometimes, especially towards the end of the game or when you have multiple potion abilities to choose from, you can get lost calculating the possibilities. But this usually doesn’t drag on terribly long, unless you’re playing with notorious overthinkers.
  • The Theme Isn’t That Strong: While the presentation is colorful and magical, the game itself is really an abstract puzzle with colored marbles. You’re just going to call the ingredients “the red marble” and “the blue marble” anyway; there won’t be any talk of dragon smoke or unicorn tears.

The Dice Mage’s Verdict

Chaos Heroes, the Potion Explosion board game is a brilliantly designed puzzle, visually stunning, and an incredibly fun family game. With its unique marble dispenser and the euphoric joy of chain reactions, it captivates you instantly—like a well-brewed love potion. With a complexity of 1.78 on BGG, it’s the perfect choice if you want something light but still thought-provoking. The playtime really does fit into the 30-45 minute window. I’d say it shines brightest with 3 players due to downtime, but it works perfectly fine with 2 or 4. The 8+ age rating on the box seems realistic to me.
It easily claims a spot in my citadel among my most treasured loot, because it proves that a great mechanic and a pinch of magic can work wonders.

Who do I recommend it for?

Potion Explosion is an absolute bullseye for families! For groups of friends looking for a light, exciting, and snappy game. For fans of logical and abstract puzzles. And for anyone who has ever dreamed of brewing potions in a cool wizarding school but was too lazy to memorize the recipes.

Who should steer clear?

I honestly can’t think of many people I wouldn’t recommend this to. Perhaps those looking for a deep, highly thematic experience where every single potion has its own rich lore—they might find this a bit “light” or superficial.

But if you’re drawn to the clinking of colorful marbles, the magic of chain reactions, and you aren’t afraid of a little brain workout, then dive into the world of Potion Explosion! I guarantee you won’t regret it!
Alright, bye for now, Chaos Heroes! I’m going to retreat before the Muggle neighbors call the Ministry of Magic! Stick around, because the depths of Dicepool Magic always have something new in store!
