Board Game Mechanics: Worker Placement & Engine Building

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Good day, Chaos Hero!

Did you just blink like a confused NPC when you heard the words worker placement and engine building? No need to worry! We are talking about mechanics here, the gears that make a game tick, typically found in Eurogames (you know, the point-salad ones). This quick peek might help you navigate what a game is actually like and whether it’s up your alley when you look it up on BGG or read a review about it.

Worker Placement – The Corporate Slavery

You have a team of “workers” (meeples, which is the actual board game term for the little wooden figures) that you send out to various locations on the game board during your turn to perform an action. This could be gathering resources, building structures, etc.

Usually, a location can only hold one (or a very limited number) of workers. The core of this mechanic is tactical positioning and competing for those limited action spots.

Honestly, sending your enthusiastic but unpaid interns (your meeples) to run errands like chopping wood or gathering berries for points… I just don’t dig the whole slavery vibe, man… That’s probably why worker placement isn’t my favorite mechanic.

It’s rarer in my sanctuary than a polite troll on the internet. It appears in games like Stone Age, Everdell, or from my own collection, Dreadful Meadows. Yeah, I know, it’s a Eurogame, excuse me, but it is just so… so pretty.

Engine Building

This is when your game becomes self-sustaining and automatically generates points for you. The goal is to create combos that amplify themselves as the game progresses, churning out victory points like a well-oiled machine.

Now, let’s pause for a minute! Let’s shed a tear for those (myself included) who are completely incapable of keeping pre-planned strategies in their heads. Which is kind of necessary for this mechanic. I think this is the most Analysis Paralysis-inducing mechanic out there.

Victorian Masterminds is an excellent example, where engine building is quite literally implemented by building a physical machine. Because how the heck could you be an evil mastermind if you aren’t tinkering with some crazy contraption? Ah, I love the theme, and the fact that we can steal iconic buildings from all over the world.

It’s not the absolute perfect example, but the bag-building in The Quacks of Quedlinburg is a chaotic form of this. We buy various ingredients for our bubbling cauldron to tune our potion and gather more points. One such potion ingredient is the mandrake, which we know from Harry Potter will permanently put us horizontal with its scream if we don’t handle it according to strict wizarding gardening protocols.

Dear Chaos Hero! That’s it for today’s mechanic magic! I hope the purple fog has lifted, and you are now a pro at understanding worker placement and engine building!

May the Chaos be with you!
