Pirate Tales | The Pirate Board Game Where We Go Looking for Trouble!

Reading Time: 6 minutes

Carina Smyth: “I don’t go looking for trouble.”
Jack Sparrow: “What a horrible way to live.”

(As heard in Pirates of the Caribbean)

🚨 Captain’s Warning!

Here’s the brutal truth right upfront, Chaos Heroes: Pirate Tales is pretty much out of print, and as far as I know, it’s only available in German, Hungarian, and Czech. So why am I writing about it? Because it’s an absolute chaotic gem, and I simply had to share this madness with you (plus, the custom ambience video I made for it at the end of the article sets the perfect mood for ANY pirate board game).

If you love hunting for rare tabletop treasures on the second-hand market, read on. But consider yourself warned before you fall madly in love with a game you can’t just snatch off the store shelves!

Chaos Heroes! In this true pirate board game, we go looking for trouble. Not just a little, a lot. And sometimes we deliberately push our luck to score the biggest loot! Weigh anchor and hoist the sails, because today we’re slamming the treasure map of Pirate Tales onto the Dicepool Magic table!

Gameplay Experience

Let’s get this straight: Pirate Tales is a dice game! With lots and lots of dice… I mean, seriously. Though, to be fair, you have plenty of ways to mess with the results. As Captain Sparrow would put it: “My plan for the next round? I’m improvising.” Brilliant strategy, right? Well, that’s exactly how this goes down.

Your turn is a cheeky gamble. You decide how far you dare to sail into the deep blue by flipping adventure cards. You might play it safe with just one for a guaranteed haul, but since you’re a true-blue scoundrel, you’ll probably risk a few more in hopes of a bigger stash.

While you’re busy flirting with fate, the rest of the crew is hanging out in the rum-soaked tavern, betting on your glorious success or your pathetic faceplant.
Once your route is set, the chaos begins: the dice roll!
You start with a handful (initially 5), and between the rolled skulls and the tricky adventure cards in your hand, you have to math out how to beat the challenges.

If you clear the final hurdle, the island’s loot is yours and you sail on. Along the way, all sorts of “accidents” can happen. For instance, your ship might develop an irresistible urge to become a submarine, or the Magnetic Mountain decides to play “scrap metal thief” and sucks everything off your deck.
After that, the gambling pirates win or lose a doubloon depending on whether they bet with you like a hero, or against you like a yellow-bellied rat.

You can trade your dice, swap them, and pimp them out from the common supply to make them even deadlier (meaning: more skulls). Then the next player sets sail. The whole thing lasts until someone’s ship hits the finish line.

Components of Pirate Tales Board Game

A playmat is included right out of the box. Yes, you heard that right! A full playmat.. I love it—the art is an absolute bullseye for me, and I can’t deny it was love at first sight. Oh, the joy of clinking those gems while swapping them, and the dice…. well, I adore them. If any game belongs on the Dicepool blog, it’s one with this many dice. The cards are decent, the doubloons are just cardboard, but if you’re fancy, you can swap them for plastic ones (I already did). The little wooden ships for the players are pre-printed and high quality. Don’t expect a fancy insert, but honestly, it’s not a horror to set up. There aren’t a million tiny bits to sort, so I’m fine with the ziplock bag life.

The Dicepool Scale

The WOW:

  • Thematic: Honestly, I felt like I was in a pirate tavern, with all the cheering and betting going on. Don’t expect an epic odyssey, but the art, the doubloons, the gems, and the card flavor text add enough “spice” so it doesn’t feel like just mindless rolling. The game’s aesthetic totally Shanghaied me. (And did I mention the dice?!)
  • Unique Mechanics: I’ve played a lot of games, but I haven’t seen this specific combo. Sure, rolling and betting aren’t new. What was fresh for me was the multi-purpose cards. In this case, adventure cards can be completed OR discarded to beat a challenge. Maybe that’s why it was a bit of a headache to explain the rules. Even wrapping my own head around it felt a bit weird at first.
  • Tension and Thrills: Every roll is a nail-biter. Will you land that final skull? Well… sometimes you don’t. It’s a stroke of genius that the others bet on the outcome. No one’s going to be so bored they start reading the ingredients on a can of air freshener; they’ll be cheering or jeering like they’re at a horse race.

The MEH…

  • Brutal Luck Factor: This is a pure-blooded dice game—tactical, not strategic. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature, and I love it for that. But if the dice decide they hate your guts today, even the most brilliant plan is going overboard. In “fate mode,” I had a run where I kept getting positive Octopus cards, while another player got nothing but disasters. You can fix the card deck balance, but the dice will always be temperamental.
  • Repetitive: It can get a bit “samey.” The text on the Peril and Octopus cards is fixed, so you’ll know them by heart eventually. The core loop is always: flip cards, then try to beat them with dice and cards. Honestly, though, it doesn’t bother me because every session is so high-stakes.

The Dice Mage’s Verdict

This pirate board game is an atmospheric, thrilling competitive adventure that perfectly captures the “yo-ho-ho” lifestyle. Pirate Tales isn’t about deep, brain-burning strategy. It’s about the shared experience, the laughs, the tension, and that triumphant feeling when you beat an impossible challenge with your very last roll.

The Pirate Tales board game works well with any player count, though 3-4 is the sweet spot for the betting mechanic (though with 4, it’ll definitely take longer than an hour). BGG suggests it for ages 6+, but I played with 9 and 10-year-olds, and they had a blast. Since it’s full of small bits, a few transparent pudding cups (like the ones I mentioned in my other post) come in handy for storing the loot.

Who do I recommend it for?

Friend groups looking for a thrill. Families where the kids (and adults) are obsessed with pirates. And anyone who loves dice games and isn’t afraid to poke fate in the eye.

Who should steer clear?

Those who despise luck and dice rolls. Anyone looking for a quiet, deep Euro-game experience where everything can be pre-calculated.

Alright, bye for now, Chaos Heroes! I’m retreating to the cargo hold to raid a treasure chest (or just the fridge)…! Stay tuned, because there are always new adventures on the waters of Dicepool!
